FAQs - Producers

What is the difference between a film or video?
At Myfilmmaker.com, we use the terms interchangeably.  In almost all cases, our filmmakers and videomakers are creating their “moving picture” products in high quality digital formats that blur the difference between videos and films.

How do I judge the quality of filmmakers referred by Myfilmmaker.com?
All our filmmakers have been vetted by Myfilmmaker.com.  We look at examples of the filmmaker’s submitted film portfolio and we review the filmmaker’s experience and references, in order to assess whether or not the filmmaker can participate in the Myfilmmaker network. We have been evaluating filmmaking talent since 2001 and have consistently been successful matching talent with commercial opportunities, including many that we have produced ourselves.

Do you use a standard process to create the films?
Yes, we have developed a standard process that we recommend that producers and filmmakers use.  Use of this process is not compulsory as filmmakers and producers often contract directly, independently of Myfilmmaker.com.
What is the difference between a Rough Cut a Fine Cut and a Final Cut? - A "Rough Cut" is the point in the editing process at which the majority of footage has been trimmed and the video is complete in its narrative flow but has some rough edges. Typically, there are no finalized titles and graphics, no special effects and audio mix has not been completed.  A film is a "Fine Cut" when the film has been well-tuned and includes titles, graphics and special effects. No major changes remain.  A "Final Cut" is the final version of the film.

How can you make sure that you pay a fair price for the film that you produce?
By carefully reviewing and comparing several bids for your project, you can be sure that you are negotiating a market-based rate.  Don’t hesitate to ask questions and state important features in the written contract that you sign with the filmmaker.  See our Ten Steps to Success list.

I do not feel that I can effectively judge the filmmakers’ abilities to complete my project?
We would be happy to assist you in evaluating the filmmaker bids.   This service relieves you of the need to assess the filmmakers' individual talents and bids.  Myfilmmaker.com has plenty of experience selecting qualified filmmakers for specific projects, as well as producing turnkey video projects that satisfy clients.

How do I protect the intellectual property of the film or video that I produce?
At the time that you award your project to the responsible filmmaker, you and the filmmaker should enter into a binding written contract that identifies not only basic business terms such as price and delivery details, but that also identifies intellectual property and its ownership.  Myfilmmaker.com provides a free simple template contract that you can use should you feel that it meets your needs.  Myfilmmaker.com is not a legal firm and makes no representations as to the suitability of this contract, and encourages you to use a lawyer should you require legal services.

Will you resell my private information?
All details concerning your private information is outlined in our privacy policy.  The nature of our service is such that your project information will be distributed in an anonymous format so that filmmakers can decide if they would like to bid on your project.  Once they have accepted to bid on your project, the filmmakers will receive information that permits them to identify and contact you so that they may provide you with an informed bid on your project.   Any sensitive information that you wish to keep confidential should not be included in the project description templates that you complete at Myfilmmaker.com.

How long has Myfilmmaker.com been doing this?
MyFilmmaker.com has been identifying talented filmmakers since 2001, and began producing short films for the Internet and mobile, when it first became practical in 2005.  We understand the production needs of all the various types of videos listed at our site.   As we began to meet filmmakers around the world, we recognized the need for other producers to access a service that could help them find and work directly with proven local film and video making talent.  We launched this service in 2009.

Does MyFilmmaker.com produce films?
MyFimmaker.com can undertake production projects for you.  We are very good at delivering productions that require low cost, good quality filming in multiple geographic markets, or low cost filming of multiple video projects to create content libraries for educators, corporations, governments and not-for-profits .   We use the MyFilmaker.com system to source talent for these projects.
